Welcome 2014...I've been waiting for ya...

Well, whether we're ready or not, the old year is making way for the new.

Well I believe I'm as ready as I'll ever be...and I hope you are too!

I'm not usually the most optimistic person, I'm sorry to say, but this year promises to be better...and I'm going to try hard to make 2014 keep that promise!

Posting in my blog, once again, becomes a priority in my mind.  I love reading all of the different blogs out there and I do believe I have some good ideas to share..I hope you think so too!

So let's raise a glass to 2014!!! I can't wait to get to know ya!!

Cha cha changes..

I'm trying to take a page from the wonderful bloggers I've been following, in that when it comes to "changing up" your house without blowing the budget...shop your house! I have to admit that it's a little harder than I first thought...why? Because I have gotten so used to this mirror, on that wall, or this chair in this room. No if you like where that chair and mirror are, then that's okay...but quite often you don't even notice the great mirror or beautiful picture frame, because they have been in the same place for so long that you don't even notice it anymore! That...is a shame!!
When budget is a big consideration..and for me it is, then moving around the things you love from one spot to another is a nice way to "freshen" up your decor while extending the love affair with some of your favourite purchases. I'm going to try and shop at home first to get the most out of all of those items I've been overlooking. Why not give it a try?

Who will it be???...

Hi everyone....and no one....
I have been writing, and neglecting, my blog for some time now. It
s so hard to commit yourself to spread the word about your blog when you're not even totally comfortable with it yourself! But here I am. I am going to put myself out there and hopefully find some followers.
One thing I know I have to work on is my photos. I plan on asking my niece Belle about the type of "beginner" camera that I should be using to start to take good photos so that my blog looks a little more professional. So that is one thing I have to take care of.  I know she will be straight forward with me and that I will be able to get the right information that will help me get my blog up and running. Do I have the money for a new camera? No. Will I stay on the lookout for a camera for a reasonable  price? Yes.
So...who will be my first follower? Who knows...I just hope they won't be my last .

Yes!! Finally I took the giant step toward changing my fireplace...

You remember my fireplace looked like this...

Yes you read that right...I painted my fireplace! And by me, I mean my son, his girlfriend, and well, I me.  I had the fireplace taped off and newspapers laid out and I waited...and pondered,...till finally my son came over and said "do you want to get that fireplace painted?".  And well, I did, and that's all it took! We were off to the races:).

In for a penny....once I started there was no turning back....

Not looking too shabby, and with three of us working away we got the painting done in record time. The paint is a mixture of grey and white (both Benjamin Moore) as I thought the  straight white might be a little too much. This was just right!

Ta Da!!  I like love it!

This looks so much better now, don't you think? I know some people are totally against painting brick...no matter how ugly..but not me! Not now!

What's next in this transformation you ask? Or more aptly...what do I do next? Well, I realized pretty quickly that I am not a fan of the orangey finish of my mantel and book shelves..so they have to go....gray!!

Stay tuned...

Weekend Warrior

Do you ever planned all of your projects for the weekend and then you're faced...with the weekend?  I'm a planner, or as I like to call me..a thinker.  I can think a weekend right away if I let myself. But this weekend I'm hoping to get a few projects started...and maybe even surprise myself by finishing one or two of them.
First on the agenda: My fireplace. I love having a fireplace, but I'm not crazy about the brick colour. It seems to be too dark for the room. I am looking for something of a cottage feel..a little shabby chic..but then it is what should I do with it?
There is the option of trimming out the fireplace with a wooden facade..and then I could paint it or antique it. Then there is the option of paint. I thought that might be an option, but I'm just not sure that I would like that solid paint look. Then I came across the blog..Beneath My Heart... http://www.beneathmyheart.net/ Traci and her husband built an addition on their home and left the exterior brick wall...now an interior wall...exposed brick. Feeling it was too orange, the decided to whitewash the brick. I loved the look! But can I duplicate it? I've decided to try and do just that! I just have to gather up the nerve to actually do that!!!! What do you think?

Work in Progress..

It may seem like I've abandoned my goal of having a blog. Not so fast..I've slowly but surely been working away trying to get my "blogging" skills up to par.
Right now I'm still in the planning stage...trying to get my ducks in a row so that I'm not wasting time...and mostly money. It's so easy to get caught up in wanting to get so much down in your home that you lose sight of the project you are starting.
Stay tuned...

Trial and Error(s)

This post is mostly for myself..obviously..as my blog does not have even one lonely follower...yet. This is mostly due to the fact that I have only vaguely said I was starting a blog about my home projects...not that I want anyone to follow it yet.  Is that common? Do most bloggers start out wanting to find the perfect header (not yet found) the right font (still experimenting) and more importantly, something to write about that they believe people would be interested in reading! I guess it's just beginners jitters.

I could also say that about my "loose" commitment to whitewash my fireplace brick! While I have progressed to the point of clearing off the mantel, I have not actually done anything else to move forward with the project.
I'd also like to use a type of board and batten wainscoting in my living room/dining room area, but I just don't know what it will look like with the unpainted woodwork. I love the look of painted wood work, but I'm having a hard time committing to it. I guess that  means I'm not ready to pull the trigger on my wood work. I'm trying to work on the little things that go into making a blog work properly...in this case it's trying to make links to other blogs, websites, etc. Let's try this...one of the blogs, Beneath My Heart, has a beautiful example of white washed brick..here Thanks Traci! Stay tuned...we're a work in process.

Yaris...you rock!!

I think I have developed the gene my two boys have inherited from their Dad....the car gene.  Does not matter what they add to their cars...price seems to be no option..but when it comes to spending money on the house...they do it...but they do it a little more grudgingly. Well I have now become a member of their club....and I love it!
I was convinced by my oldest that a new car was the way to go...and boy was he right.  I LOVE my new car!  I purchased a 2013 Yaris 4 door hatchback.  I told myself not to have too many expectations for this basic little car...but boy was I surprised.
My sweet little ride has been great from the get go.  It feels so big inside and I love the ride.  Not sure how it's going to be in the winter...but I'll deal with it.
Thank you so much to both my wonderful sons who support me no matter what I do...love, love, love them.

Blogger Envy

While I have been anticipating my foray into blogging I think I am being mesmerised by the bloggers I admire.  I have been following quite a few blogs that I really enjoy but in some ways that is hampering me from writing my own blog. I don't believe I'll measure up some how. I keep putting pressure on myself and that seems to give me an out to post on my blog. Well no more! LOL
Who am I kidding? Please bear with me while I try to figure out just what the heck I think I'm doing here!
In the meantime...I think you should check out some of the bloggers I love, to love:)
http://www.younghouselove.com/
http://theletteredcottage.net/
http://unskinnyboppy.com/
http://www.beneathmyheart.net/
are just a couple of the ones I love...check them out, and I'll keep you updated on the other ones I love...

Oh I love a rainy night...

Well you got that right!...I'm sitting out on my porch at 10:25 at night on a Friday in July and life couldn't be better.  It's a cool, light rain and the inner city traffic is the background music for the evening while I sit and sip my Forty Creek Whiskey. This is the life.
I spent the day waiting patiently for the phone call that never came, to tell me that they had found my new car. This is not just any new car, this is my first new car! I guess there is a first time for everything:)
My dear old Mazda Protege has seen me through many a year..but at the ripe ole age of 14 she has seen better days. I realize it is just a matter of time before she gives up the ghost and leaves me stranded, once again, on the side of the highway on my way to work.
My oldest son convinced me that it was time to bite the bullet and buy a new car. Since he works at Toyota, and consistently they are offering up a pretty good no interest deal right now, that the time was right to get me into a brand spanking new vehicle. I have to admit that I am pretty excited at the prospect.
The car? A 2013 Toyota Yaris. I know what you're thinking...Yaris? But it's a sweet little ride and I can't wait till it's mine. My Mazda? Well she's done a great job the last few years getting me from a to b...usually...but it's time for a new kid on the block.  This one I hope will take me to retirement and beyond!!!! Although my colour choice was limited (three colours...WTF?) I hope that my first, first choice, will be able to be located.  I don't know what I'll do if the only car available is silver. No offence to my old Mazda...but please....no more silver!!!! I wait with bated breath for my dark grey Yaris to appear.
Stay tuned....

Road Trip..

Today I took a much anticipated day off to try and catch up with some work around the house and just kind of recharge. Well the nicest of things happened. My friend Steph offered to take me on a tour of the wine country area we are so lucky to live in, and let me be the passenger for the day.
Well how could I turn that down?
I packed a light lunch and off we went to lose ourselves for a couple of hours on a beautiful, breezy, July day.

First stop.. Lakeshore Antiques in NOTL. I had never even heard of this place before today, but what a lot of fun we had rummaging through the store finding treasures, memories, and lots of laughs. There were two ladies manning the store and they were extremely nice and helpful. I ended up up what I call a cottage toaster..and yes, it works! They were helpful enough to plug it in for me to make sure that I would be able to use it if I so desired.

The rest of the day went by quickly, with a stop along the water for lunch, and just a general meandering throughout the rest of the afternoon. Stephanie knows how to show a girl a good time...and a good time was certainly had by me. I can't forget our stop at the candy store... Nigh's Chocolates is an unforgettable experience if you love chocolate...and lets face it...who doesn't love chocolate? Even though there was a ton of construction going on out in front of their store...business still continued in Candyland.
So many different types of chocolate to choose from...and yet..I still was able to make my choice. Chocolate covered black licorice (a personal favourite of mine) and a mix with hot peppers which turned out to be divine. Of course I can't make a habit of stopping there regularly...but you can! It's a great little something for the person who has everything. I got my sister a wine glass cover..."I like my men like I like my chocolate...rich" hope that applies to her husband as I gotten pretty used to having him around!

Am I alone out here?

I'm so intrigued by all of the beautiful blogs out there!  I have to admit that trying to start up my own has been totally intimidating!! Yes, I said it...."totally".
It was brought to my attention recently that I say "totally" a lot! Especially for a person well into middle age. At first I brought myself up short every time I inadvertently said it...again! But now?  I'm gonna to run with it..because I am TOTALLY excited about finally jumping into the blogasphere! Did I make that word up? Or just spell it incorrectly? No matter...I'm here!

My entry has been severely delayed as I just can't seem to decide how I want to begin..what I want my blog to look like, and finally..will anyone care? Well, even if I am just talking to myself, I've started.  The wonderful blogs that I have been reading are going to be a tough act to follow, sleek and professional. I only hope that they all had humbler beginnings and that I can aspire to something better every day.

So here I am world..for better or worse..this is "life on Morgan"...totally.

Welcome to Morgan Street!

Well, I've delayed posting trying to get some direction as to how I would like my blog to appear, or which direction I would like it to take...and suddenly I realized that it really doesn't matter.  What matters is that I start...start posting, blogging, getting an online presence so that I can start doing what I love...making my house a home and sharing all of my home reno adventures with anyone brave enough to come along for the ride.
The decisions are mine to make now, and the consequences are also mine to bear...but I okay with that. There is something pretty special about knowing that you have complete control over what is actually going to happen in your home.
So please, come along for the ride and feel free to give me your opinion on my choices or proposed projects.   While I can't promise I'll take all of your advice, I can promise that I'll listen.  Heck, I'm on my own in this...I'll take all the help I can get!
